Boulanger, Lili and Nadia: In Memoriam Lili Boulanger. 1993 Marco-Polo. Released on: 1993-12-01. Artist: Catherine Marchese Composer: Emile Naoumoff Artist: Emile Naoumoff. In Memoriam Lili Boulanger. Your Rating. Overview . Marie-Juliette Olga Lili Boulanger French: 21 August 1893 15 March 1918 was a French composer, and the first female winner of the Prix de Rome composition prize. Her older sister was the noted composer and composition teacher Nadia Boulanger. As a Parisian-born child prodigy, Boulanger's talent was apparent at the age of two, when Gabriel Fauré, a friend of the family and later one of Boulanger's teachers, discovered she had perfect pitch. Her parents, both of whom were musicians. This title offers small-scale pieces of both Lili and Nadia Boulanger, plus a piece by the main performer-pianist, Emile Naoumoff. The music itself is not too much of a stretch, considering that Le sacre du printemps and Pierrot Lunaire came from the same decade as the small catalog of Lili and Nadia Boulanger. This recording is has some importance as one of the few recordings of the Boulanger ouevre. However, its content offers none of the musical insights that their famed pupils Copland, Thomson, Harris, Blitzstein provided the world. A true genius, this album is an excellent introduction to her work and special artistry. Read more. 12 people found this helpful.
