The book opens as King Arthur prepares himself for his final battle. Merlyn reappears to complete Arthur's education and discover the cause of wars. As he did in The Sword in the Stone, Merlyn again demonstrates ethics and politics to Arthur by transforming him into various animals. The Book of Merlyn takes place during the night prior to Arthur's final confrontation with Mordred. Merlyn shows up, something like forty years too late, with his whole menagerie of animal-philosophers in order to drag the King through one last sermon on the nature of man, the inherent wickedness in the heart of man, the inevitability of war and the necessity of failure. And Merlyn is a massive misanthrope. He comes off like Jean Paul Sartre and Nietzsche rolled into one cantankerous, bearded prat. He is professorial and crotchety, long-winded and without compassion. He isn't the Mer. The Book of Merlyn, published posthumously, was T. H White's True ending to the otherwise beautiful Once and Future King. Having finished Once and Future King just a few days earlier, I was touched by the elegaic, bittersweet note upon which it ended. We have Merlyn teaming up with his animal friends to help the now elderly King Arthur figure out what the point of it all was. It's not as good as the previous two books in the saga, but it gets three stars because of its focus on humanity and morality. White is very interested in the role of humanity. Follows the events of the last days of King Arthur and his magician, Merlyn, in this conclusion to The Once and Future King. An evocative and exciting tale of wizardry and was born Arthur Christopher Orme Plummer in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the son of Isabella Mary née Abbott and John Orme Plummer, who was secretary to the Dean of Sciences at McGill University. His maternal great-grandfather was Canadian Prime Minister Sir John Abbott. Plummer was an only child. White, Christopher Plummer - The Book Of Merlyn, King Arthur And Merlyn's Animal Council LP, Album. Caedmon Records. TC 1630. The Book of Merlyn consists of one long dream of King Arthurs--a. problem solving one. White intended that one brief shining moment. that was known as Camelot to be quite different from what emerged in. the published version of his Once and Future King2 or the musical and. film it spawned. In Whites fifth and concluding volume, Merlyn was indeed appearing. before the King on the eve of impending war with his son Mordred to. save them. I have suddenly discovered, White wrote to his former. his animal mentors of The Sword in the Stone. Merlyn tells him, among other things: - Between 1100 and 1900, the English were at war for four hundred and. I was disappointed with the Book of Merlyn, which in fact is hardly a novel. Merlyn's supposedly natural history lesson is but an excuse for discoursing on war and the bellicosity of Man. The only passages where there's an actual story are when Arthur visits the ant nest and travels with the wild geese, but these chapters were already included in The Sword in the Stone. As for what happened to Lancelot and Guenever, it is briefly mentioned in the manner of history books. The introduction on T. White's life is interesting, and there are some nice illustrations, but as a whole. The Book of Merlyn has been cited as a major influence by such illustrious writers as Kazuo Ishiguro, J. Rowling, Helen Macdonald, Neil Gaiman, and Lev Grossman. ÒArriving from beyond the curve of time and apparently from the grave, The Book of Merlyn stirs its own pages, saying, wait: you didnÕt get the whole story. It gives us a final glimpse of those two immortal characters, Wart and Merlyn, up close, slo-mo, with a considered and affectionate scrutiny. While preparing for his final, fatal battle with his bastard son, Mordred, Arthur returns to the Animal Council with Merlyn, where the deliberations center on ways to abolish war. The Book of Merlyn. Published by Berkley Medallion, United States 1978. His childhood mentor Merlyn enters to give Arthur one last lesson in life, and the king is whisked away to the badger's sett to meet again with the Animal Council, to which Merlyn had introduced him as a boy.
