Some songs remind me of Antony and the Johnsons. Then the album goes to a different, quieter world. Favorite track: To Build A Home. Ma Fleur - The Cinematic Orchestra. Ma Fleur my flower, in French is the fourth full-length release and third proper studio album by The Cinematic Orchestra, released on 7 May 2007. The North American version of the album contains 10 tracks in a different sequence from the UK version and omits Child Song. The song To Build a Home was used in an award-winning 2008 Schweppes Lemonade advertisement called Burst and in the 2010 Australian-French film The Tree, and the similar shorter song That Home in the trailer for 2011 film. Not long after Every Day's release, Swinscoe began writing music for another Cinematic LP, but in another direction from where he'd gone previously. This was a series of quiet, contemplative instrumentals, with Rhodes keyboards and reedy clarinets, simply begging for a narrative call them orchestrations for cinema. Apr 2007 Dealing with themes of loss and love - and in itself representing a kind of absence - 'Ma Fleur' is fertile ground for Swinscoe's brand of music-making, for while people have talked about what he does in terms of jazz, the truth is that the basis of his music has always been in raw emotion. Ma Fleur is a triumphant return for The Cinematic Orchestra, a certain rise in artistic expression for Jason Swinscoe and his instrumentalists. The albums flaws are more in its presentation than its performance. As a whole, the album feels disjointed and broad. Each song represents a scene, and with what the listener is given, it is hard to imagine these scenes fitting together into any sort of movie. Swinscoe portrays the settings and expects the listeners to imagine everything else - plotline, characters, etc. The vocalists give vague ideas in their lyrics, but it is impossibly hard to conn. Moving beyond noir mood pieces, Ma Fleur delves into stark, heartbreakingly beautiful folk and soul. Fontella Bass' haunting vocals give Familiar Ground and Breathe a timeless quality, and Lamb's Lou Rhodes evokes Nick Drake at his most vulnerable on the spare, acoustic Music Box another Rhodes-led song, Time and Space, comes on like winter dusk-chilly but also comforting.
